Generating a distribution that is comfortable for both eating and relaxing is quite a challenge. Today, our interior designers give us all the keys on how to organize the dining area and succeed. We even face many troubles to decorate our dining table.
In this article, we are going to share some authentic ideas about how to organize the dining table and dining room as well.
The 10 ideas to organize your dining Table & room
We claim, with permission from the kitchen, the role of the dining room as the most familiar place in today’s houses. Open to the living room or independent, it is clear that these days it has become one of the corners of the home where we spend the most time.
Everything revolves around the table
When it comes to the dining room, the star of the place will be the table. This must be of adequate proportions to allow people to move around it and to have enough free space between one person and another when sitting.
To choose the type of table that works best for you at home, take into account the following aspects: the size and shape of the space, and the number of people who will normally use the dining room. Ideally, the table should imitate the shape of the area in which it is located so that there is harmony, in addition to respecting the dimensions so as not to end up in a very tight place.
There are three basic types of tables that you can choose from for your home:
- Round: it is the most dynamic of the table types. It has no ends and the distance to the center is the same for all diners. The diameter will dictate how many people can sit on it. For example, if you want to place six chairs around you, the minimum measurement should be 1.4 meters.
- Square: like the round ones, they facilitate the interaction of those who are at the table and the distance to the center remains the same for everyone. It has the advantage that it can be pushed to one side or to a corner when not in use to gain space in the dining room. A square table on which each side measures 1.4 meters is capable of gathering eight people.
- Rectangular: in this case we speak in the most traditional way. It can end in round or straight ends. It is ideal for receiving more guests and is characterized by the fact that it marks the position of the hosts that should be located at the ends. It is recommended that the table measure 1.60 x 0.09 meters minimum if you want to place six chairs.
Another aspect to consider when choosing the table is the height of the table. Ideally, it should be between 72 and 75 centimeters above the ground. Not only is it an adequate distance for diners to be located, but it also guarantees space to store chairs underneath it when not in use.
The type of chair is also important. These may or may not have armrests – in either case they must be of the appropriate size to be stored under the table. You can buy the dining room and the matching chairs or play with the decoration and create a contrast between the different objects. In addition to conventional seats, you can also choose between benches and armchairs; note that the latter will take up more space.
Let’s start the 10 most effective ideas to organize the dining room table!
1. The table always made to measure
Of your needs, your tastes and the available space. The truth is that we dream of an XL table where everyone enters and we can leave plates and dishes without a problem, but it is not always possible. Thus, in a dining room of 15 square meters, opt for a model that does not exceed 80 x 200 cm, and in one of 25 square meters, for one of 110 x 220 cm, for example.
In addition, it must adapt to the shape of the space: the round ones or oval with extensions are perfect in dining rooms of a few meters, since they grow when we need them, they bring positions for pleasant after-dinner tables and they are more comfortable before last-minute guests. Without forgetting the number of diners, since it is just as unpleasant to eat four people at a table of 10, as vice versa. The ideal is to have one that grows, extensible or with wings, that is capable of easily going from four to eight diners.
2. With storage place
Although the storage space should be centralized in the kitchen, it never hurts to have a piece of furniture to store in the dining room. Recover the sideboard as an indisputable ally to keep everything organized and close at hand, without forgetting its decorative role, very much in vogue this season. Practical, this low piece hides a lot of space, without overwhelming the decoration. When choosing, better one with character (the white ones triumph in any decoration) than bland and impersonal, so boring that it does not add anything to the room and spills into the atmosphere.
3. With fair chairs
The number of seats must be proportional to the size of the table and the use of the room. For example, on a two-meter rectangular table, the ideal is six chairs because, even if they fit eight, it would be a serious aesthetic error, even if you have plenty of space. Remember that it never hurts to have extra seats and having a bench, which does not occupy, offers more space and is ideal for sharing. Another aspect that you should not underestimate is comfort, especially if you use the dining room for more purposes, such as doing homework or working at home, or you like to lengthen the table.
4. With delimited areas
If the living room and dining room share space, separate your activities clearly, so that both have their own autonomy. A good way to do this is to play with the light. Despite the fact that your first impulse is to place the table in the brightest area, the ideal is to do just the opposite and thus create a cozy corner. Another good idea is to place a piece of furniture, like a low sideboard, that acts as a visual barrier; or put a big mirror right next to it. A carpet can also set limits, but it is only recommended in wide spaces and in dining rooms with little jogging, since for practical purposes (crumbs, stains …) it is not a great alternative.
5. With a second or third life
It is not, as it happened before, having a forgotten place for much of the year, which only ‘opens’ on big occasions, but rather having a real space to live. To do this, it must be focused on the lives of its inhabitants and give it a second (or third) chance. For example, if there are children in the house, it may be the perfect place to do homework or color. To make it really work and more dynamic, go for interchangeable furniture, which makes meals less rigid and diversifies seats, placing an extra comfortable chair next to a slightly more rigid chair.
6. With little furniture
Do not overload the room with unnecessary pieces that saturate the space, especially if you do not have too many square meters, and do not let it lose its practical vocation, giving priority to the table and chairs. Remember that we do not need many things around the table, and that the furniture is, above all, a pretext to place, for example, a lamp.
7. Located in the right place
Because no matter how well dressed you are if you are in the wrong place, you can never have an important role in family life. The important thing is that it is practical on a daily basis, locating itself at a strategic point. Therefore, it should be as close as possible to the kitchen and have an easy way between the two rooms for the many comings and goings that occur. Keep in mind the necessary perimeter so that the chairs allow everyone to feel comfortable and do not neglect the space around the table, also essential for good circulation.
8. In good tune
Being a place to share with family and friends, it is undoubtedly full of good memories. So that you all have a pleasant moment at the table, personalize this space with materials, colors and some daring touch. Having few furniture, look for warmth in pleasant materials such as wood, copper or vegetable fibers; opt for cozy light tones or warm tones, such as browns, reds and mustards; And do not forget to incorporate some brushstroke of color with the curtains or chairs, which give life and strength to the whole.
9. With good lighting
The dining room requires a direct light that illuminates well and allows us to see, without a doubt, what we eat, does not dazzle the diners and at the same time provides a pleasant atmosphere. Ceiling lamps are the best option, accompanied, if possible, by different points of light, standing or table, which help to create an atmosphere.
10. Open to the kitchen
The kitchens open to the dining room or living room arouse many envies, since, in addition to creating unique spaces full of charm and life, they give greater fluidity between the different areas, clear the environment, allow you to keep track of children while you cook … You can set the dining table at the same height as the worktop, to give visual continuity, or establish the central island as an element of coexistence between the two environments. Of course, remember that they are not suitable for all homes, so before throwing partitions, weigh the pros and cons.
